Washingtonia Robusta is commonly referred to as the Mexican Fan Palm.

It gets this name because it is native to Mexico and has attractive fan-like fronds that spread out to create a relatively large canopy.

This palm tree is one of the easiest to transplant, so it is popular on construction projects and for landscapes that need to make a statement. This tree can reach heights of up to 100 feet, so it is definitely a grand palm tree!

Identifying Palm Trees

There are thousands of different types of palm trees, and some are easier to identify than others. For example, the Bottle Palm has a very distinctive bulbous trunk shape.

Many palm trees, however, have similar attributes.

The type of palm tree will determine how it should be cared for and how large it will grow, so it is important to be able to identify a palm tree. For landscaping projects, you may need to know how big a tree will grow or whether to plant it near a sidewalk or building without worrying about over-growth.

In order to identify the palm tree, you will need to look at a few very specific attributes.

Fronds

The fronds are the “leaves” of the tree. Palm trees do not technically have leaves, but they do have leaflets that grow from a central stalk. Pinnate leaves grow in different locations from the stalk.

These can be found in the Queen Palm and the Areca Palm. Fan-shaped fronds are just as they sound—each frond grows from the same central location.

The Washingtonia Robusta has fan-shaped fronds, as does the Chinese Fan Palm.
Trunk

Most palm trees have either a solitary trunk or a multi-trunk.

Most multi-trunk palms are slower growing and will not get too tall, such the Lady Palm. They look almost like shrubs and work great as screens or as borders between properties. Solitary trunk palms, on the other hand, can grow very tall.

Some trunks have very distinctive markings, such as the Ribbon Palm, which has ribbon-like pieces coming from the trunk as it grows.

Flowers and Fruits

Although coconuts are perhaps the most well-known fruit of palm trees, such as the Green Malayan Palm, other fruits are common as well.

For example, the Jelly Palm will produce a fruit that can be made into a delicious jelly. Larger palm trees often flower and create attractive, colorful additions to your landscaping project.
