Bamboo is Versatile

Bamboo is a giant woody grass, not a tree, and is the world’s fastest-growing plant. Some bamboo varieties are known to grow up to two inches per hour in optimal weather!

Bamboo can grow everywhere except Antarctica and survive in many different climate conditions, including dry regions where droughts cause other crops to fail. Some dwarf species of bamboo are small and decorative, while others are tall and thick, spreading quickly to create nearly impassable barriers.

Bamboo can also be made into nearly anything. It is extremely light, has a tensile strength greater than steel, and is very popular as a building material. It can also be made into furniture, paper, fuel and a myriad of other products. When woven for clothing, it’s soft and durable.

And, to top it off, parts of the bamboo plant are edible!

Bamboo is Manageable

Many people are afraid to use bamboo in their landscapes because they fear that the plant will spread wildly. Running bamboo does send out vast underground networks of roots and is the hardest to control. The underground shoots can travel as far as 10 to 15 feet, producing new culms all along the way.

By far, the most manageable and non-invasive species of bamboos are the clumping varieties. They stay in one place and won’t creep horizontally more than a few inches per year.

Each new rhizome produces only a single culm, located very close to its mother culm, and the plant is easy to maintain. If you can keep a lawn healthy, you can manage clumping bamboo.

Bamboo is Eco-Friendly

A grove of bamboo absorbs carbon dioxide and releases 35% more oxygen into the air than a similar-sized grove of hardwood trees. It does not need any agricultural chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides) to thrive, so no chemicals leach into the soil and deplete its nutrients.

Roots left in place after harvesting help preserve vital moisture in the soil, prevent soil erosion, and will draw water closer to the surface in areas where the water table is low.

Depending on the species, bamboo can be harvested in one to five years.

The roots remain in the ground after the canes are cut and will grow new shoots without any need for additional planting or cultivation. In comparison, an oak tree takes at least 40 years to mature and will not re-grow.
