Palms In Maryland’s Climate
Maryland’s climate ranges from USDA Zones 5B to 8A, with most of the state lying in the 6B-8A range. Because of its climate, Maryland demands cold-hardy palms. At Palmco, our nursery offers several varieties of palms that are suited to such a climate.
One such palm is the Windmill Palm, which can grow in climates as cold as Zone 7B.
The Windmill is an impressive, slow-growing palm that is used often as an accent on walkways. Windmill palms can grow as tall as 40 feet, but their typical maximum height is 25 feet.
This variety can grow as far north as Canada, and is easily hardy enough to thrive in the Maryland climate.
Another palm that is capable of being cultivated in Maryland’s climate is the Sabal Palm. The Sabal palm is a distinctively tall, narrow palm, composed almost entirely of trunk.
Its trunk extends nearly to its top, where it meets its head.
The Sabal grows routinely to heights of around 40 feet, but, since it is extraordinarily slow-growing, it takes a long time to get there.
Able to tolerate a wide variety of soil and weather conditions, including frosts and freezes, the Sabal is capable of growing in much of Maryland, particularly along its coasts.

To choose the right palm for your project, it’s important to consider soil, temperature, sunlight, water and size.
Knowing how tall a palm can ultimately get is one of the most important factors.
Some palms grow very quickly, and that small palm you planted may grow to 50 feet or more, interfering with power lines and taking over the landscape.
Smaller palm varieties make stunning single specimens, while larger trees, whether dense and majestic or slim and willowy, make an impressive statement.
