Summers are hot and humid with significant rainfall and frequent thunderstorms. Winter, spring and fall are typically mild and dry. In fact, winter temperatures are warmer on the Pinellas Peninsula than on mainland Florida.
How to Differentiate Palm Trees
Palm trees are evergreen, mostly tropical plants in the family Palmae (also known as Arecaceae). Most are tree-like, although that’s not always the case, and there are other features, such as leaf shape and trunk shape, that differ among them and make them unique.
Leaf Shape
Most palm trees can be differentiated by their leaf shape:
1. Pinnate, or “feather,” leaves generally have two rows of leaflets that resemble feathers along each side of the stem.
Examples of our pinnate palm trees are:
- Adonidia/Christmas Palm (Adonidia merrillii)
- Canary/Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis)
- Mule Palm (xButiagrus nabonnandii)
- Pindo/Jelly Palm (Butia capitata)
2. Palmate, or “fan,” leaves have leaflets branching out from the base of the leaf. They look like an open hand with fingers radiating out from the palm.
Examples of our palmate palms include:
- European Fan /Mediterranean Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis)
- Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsis)
- Ribbon/Ribbon Fan Palm (Livistona decipiens)
- Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei)
3. Other variations, although less common, include costapalmate, bi-pinnate, simple, bifid, and, sometimes, a completely irregular leaf shape.
Trunk Shape
There are three possible trunk shapes:
1. Solitary palms have a single tall, straight trunk, like a column, and new leaves are produced at the top.
Our solitary palms include:
- Sabal/Cabbage Palm (Sabal palmetto)
- Sylvestris Palm (Phoenix sylvestris)
- Thatch/Silk Top Thatch Palm (Thrinax radiate)
2. Clustering palms grow new stems from ground level, but the stems are clumped together and are part of one plant. These multi-trunk species of palm trees are usually shorter than those with single trunks.
Our clustering palms include:
- Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens)
- European Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis)
- Fishtail Palm (Caryota mitis)
3. No trunk. Some varieties of palms have subterranean trunks. They grow underground or run along the ground like ground cover; making it look like the tree has no trunk at all. The Saw Palmetto, or Scrub Palm, is in this category.
