Many are tall, growing to heights of 50 to 100 feet and more. But there are many landscapes that require smaller, more compact varieties of palm trees for use as focal pieces, backyard plantings in small yards, and for tight or narrow spaces. We offer an assortment of smaller palms to transform any landscape into a tropical paradise.

Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis)

This slow-growing palm has a uniquely shaped trunk (bottle-shaped) and averages 5 to 7 feet in height. It doesn’t produce many fronds but they are long and graceful. The Bottle makes an outstanding accent palm for tropical gardens or sheltered entrance areas, and you will often see it in the center of a circular driveway. This variety is drought-tolerant, but freezing or sub-freezing temperatures can kill it. This is an excellent container palm since it grows so slowly.

Christmas Palm (Adonidia merrillii)

This versatile and attractive palm, also called the Adonidia Palm, grows reasonably quickly to a height of 10 to 20 feet. During the summer, it produces light green flower buds that become creamy blossoms and, in December, the flowers are followed by green fruits that turn bright red as they ripen. They are grown and sold as single, double or triple formations most regularly. Also cultivated in quad and multi formations these classic palms can be used to decorate well-lit interior spaces as well outdoor landscapes.

Mule Palm (xButiagrus nabonnandii)

The Mule Palm is an eye-catching conversation piece that no one else in your neighborhood is likely to have. It is one of the hardiest feather palms and is a man-made hybrid between the Pindo and the Queen palms that grows to an average of 20 feet. Mature specimens are quite rare due to the difficulty in producing this palm. When mature, the Mule Palm displays a dark brown trunk with massive caliper. Its fronds are long with wide, dark green leaflets that resemble a coconut palm. Despite its tropical appearance, it is cold hardy down to at least 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pindo Palm (Butia capitata)

This is one of the hardiest landscape palms currently in production. It has graceful, feather-like blue-green fronds and slowly grows to an average of 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide in cultivation. Another common name for it is Jelly Palm because of its bright yellow fruit that can be made into a jelly. The Pindo likes a sunny, moist, and well-drained location. It can take full sun from a very young age, but will usually grow taller in full shade. It’s ideal for Zones 8 through 11 and is very drought and cold tolerant.
