Alphonse Karr Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphonse Karr’)

One of the best screen or hedge bamboos is Alphonse Karr. It is a dense Chinese bamboo that grows to 20 to 25 feet with 1- inch diameter culms. The plant has striking yellow culms and random green stripes, that give it a golden glow to any garden. New shoots and culms are often pink. The variety has low water requirements and is extremely cold-hardy once established.

Angel Mist (Dendrocalamus minor ‘Amoenus’)

Also known as Ghost Bamboo, this very rare mid-sized Chinese bamboo is one of the smallest Dendrocalamus species. It grows to a typical height of 35 feet. It has 3-inch diameter pale lime green culms with dark green stripes and a waxy powder covering. This tough species can handle a variety of soil conditions. Angel Mist bamboo makes a strong, colorful ornamental centerpiece and is ideal for use as a privacy screen or an avenue planting.

Black Asper (Dendrocalamus asper ‘Hitam’)

If you have a lot of room and want a very tall bamboo, Black Asper from Indonesia can reach staggering heights of 80 to 100 feet. This species has 10-inch to 12-inch diameter culms that are soft and velvety with a brownish fur that covers brown/black culms. Although it can withstand frost, it prefers warmth and humidity. Black Asper is an impressive ornamental bamboo that is also highly valued for its timber.

Timor Black Bamboo (Bambusa lako)

Timor Black Bamboo is one of the most striking landscaping bamboos. It comes from the Indonesian island of Timor. The mature plant has shiny purple/black culms with thin green stripes and medium bright green leaves. The culms are about 3 inches in diameter and straight, growing to about 30 feet outside the tropics. Leaves grow only on the upper half of the plant, so this variety works well where height is needed.

Tropical Blue Bamboo (Bambusa chungii)

This popular medium-tight clumper from China and has light green leaves that are nicely spaced. Thin-walled culms that develop a stunning powder-like, soft, light blue bloom and requires a little more room than one of the tight clumping varieties. At a maximum height of about 35 feet with 3-inch diameter culms, Tropical Blue Bamboo is appropriate as an ornamental or as a dense privacy hedge.
