The slow-growing Canary Palm is famous for its formal yet bold appearance. It is perhaps most well-known for its pineapple-shaped crown, but has a striking canopy of fronds as well. Although this palm is hardy, it requires frequent fertilization and well-drained soil.

Once the palm is established, however, it is very drought and cold tolerant.

Fertilizing a Palm Tree

The Canary Palm is known for needing a bit more care than the average palm tree.

Without the right combination of nutrients, its leaves may begin to wilt and brown. Palmco makes every effort to deliver you a healthy palm, but the moving process can be hard on the tree.

Your Canary Palm will likely need extra care to become established once it is planted.

Palm trees fertilizers are created to fit their unique needs.

Most palm fertilizers will have a ratio on them that represents the three required nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. However, other micronutrients, like manganese and magnesium, are important as well.

A deficiency in any of these areas may cause the palm to produce some negative side effects.

  • Potassium Deficiency – If your tree starts showing yellow, orange, or brown flecks on the older leaves, then it may have potassium deficiency. New shoots could eventually be affected if the tree remains untreated.
  • Manganese Deficiency – New leaves are most affected by a manganese deficiency. They may be yellow and smaller than a healthy leaf. They may also wither. If this condition is left untreated, it could actually kill the palm tree. Queen Palms and Royal Palms are especially vulnerable to this type of deficiency.
  • Magnesium Deficiency – If older leaves begin to yellow on the edges while the middle stays green, your palm tree may have a magnesium deficiency. The palm tree could take several months to recover from this type of deficiency, even after it has been treated. Date palms, like the Senegal Date Palm, are particularly susceptible to magnesium deficiency.

Quick Tips

When you are applying fertilizer, be sure to keep the following tips in mind:

  • Do not fertilize when the ground is dry. This could burn the palm tree and actually kill it in some circumstances.
  • Always read the package directions carefully before applying fertilizer.
  • Avoid putting fertilizer directly on the truck of the palm tree. This could scar the trunk.
  • Use a slow release fertilizer when possible. If you are using a quick release version, avoid direct contact with the trunk and tree roots.
  • Check to be sure that the fertilizer has all of the required nutrients for your specific palm, and is specially formulated for palm trees.
