Bamboo Is Not A Tree.
It’s a giant woody grass and is the world's fastest-growing plant.
Some varieties are known to grow up to two inches per hour! Bamboo can grow everywhere except Antarctica and survive in many different climate conditions. There are dwarf species of bamboo that are small and decorative, and others that are tall, thick and dramatic, spreading fast to create nearly impassable barriers.
Many exotic varieties of tropical bamboo have only become available in the last decade.
They’ve steadily grown in popularity for landscaping.
Architects are designing with them. Landscapers are planting them. Homeowners are asking for them. Consider one of these versatile, manageable and stunning clumping bamboos for your next project:
• Dwarf Buddha Belly Bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris 'Wamin')
This exotic dwarf bamboo from Burma looks like something designed by Dr. Seuss!
There’s no other bamboo like it in the world. It has pronounced swollen bulges, called “bellies,” above and below each culm’s internodes. Fortunately, it loves Florida’s warm, humid climate and consistently produces bellies here. The compact Dwarf Buddha Belly grows 12 to 15 feet tall with 3” diameter culms. It’s somewhat sensitive to cold and may suffer frost damage below 30°F, but the roots won’t be damaged. This bamboo is an attention-getter in any landscape.
• Golden Hawaiian Bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris 'Vittata')
This popular beauty is sometimes called Hawaiian Gold Timber Bamboo or Painted Bamboo.
It’s one of the most cultivated ornamental bamboos in the tropical world. One of our most colorful bamboo varieties, Golden Hawaiian produces bright yellow culms with random green vertical stripes that look like they were painted on, drips and all! Canes can reach 4” in diameter and heights of 35 to 50 feet in about three years.
It’s cold-sensitive and susceptible to frost damage at 27° to 30°F. This gorgeous clumping bamboo is perfect for hedges and windbreaks as well as for erosion control on slopes or riverbeds.
• Nana Bamboo (Bambusa nana)
You may also hear this variety referred to as Thai Beauty Bamboo or Silk Bamboo.
Originating from Thailand, it’s a stunning ornamental with soft, small, fern-like leaves, an upright growth habit and thick culms.
Nana Bamboo is known as the most beautiful erect hedging and screening bamboo in the world. Naturally branchless near the ground, it grows to a medium height of about 25 feet and arches at the top, creating a feathery, delicate umbrella-like canopy. This is a rare and very difficult variety to propagate, but will make a majestic addition to any space.
