The Bambusa genus is a group of tropical and subtropical species that are well-suited to warm, southern climates yet cold-hardy to about +20° F.

They are native to Southeast Asia, China, the Himalayas, New Guinea, Melanesia, and the Northern Territory of Australia.

Our bambusa Varieties Include:

  • Alphonse Karr Bamboo
  • Emerald Bamboo
  • Golden Hawaiian Bamboo
  • Oldhamii Bamboo
  • Seabreeze Bamboo
  • Timor Black Bamboo

Dendrocalamus is a genus that includes some of the tallest, most impressive bamboos in the world. These species are found in the Indian Subcontinent, China and Southeast Asia. They also thrive in Florida’s USDA Hardiness Zones 8 to 10.

Palmco grows the Angel Mist Bamboo and Black Asper Bamboo varieties of Dendrocalamus bamboo.

Many of these clumping bamboo varieties have only become available in the U.S. during the past decade, providing a new and environmentally friendly component for landscapes.

Bamboo’s Environmentally Friendly Qualities

Bamboo is a woody grass, not a tree.

And it’s the fastest growing plant on the planet.

Like other grasses, you can cut bamboo and it will quickly grow back.

Not only can it grow up to three feet in one day, it often reaches maturity in 3 to 4 years, making it an exceptionally renewable crop compared to lumber.

Most hardwood trees don’t reach maturity before they are 30 to 50 years old, and depleted hardwood groves can take hundreds of years to recover after logging.

Eco-Friendly Plant Attributes:

  • A bamboo grove absorbs carbon dioxide and releases 35% more oxygen into the air than a similar-sized grove of hardwood trees.
  • Bamboo doesn’t need any agricultural chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides) in order to flourish. This means there are no chemicals to leach into the soil and deplete its nutrients, or to pollute the air and groundwater.
  • Bamboo grows in a variety of conditions. It can grow in wetland areas, high mountain elevations, and in dry regions where droughts cause other crops to fail.
  • Bamboo is a water-saving crop. It requires no irrigation when grown in its natural habitat. Compare this with a crop like cotton. It takes as much water as a human being drinks over the course of 3 years to produce enough cotton for a single T-shirt.
  • Bamboo roots are somewhat like a net. They help reduce runoff and soil erosion during heavy rains. Leaving bamboo roots in place after harvesting helps preserve vital moisture in the soil.
  • When harvested, bamboo roots remain in the ground after the canes are cut. New shoots will grow from the extensive root system without any additional planting or cultivation.
  • In a single harvest, you can get 20 times more building material from bamboo than you can get from hardwood trees. And its strength-to-weight ratio and simple tensile strength are better than that of mild steel.
  • After harvesting, almost all of the plant can be used to make a wide variety of products, from soil-enriching mulch to beautiful furniture to fishing poles to musical instruments to weapons.
  • Depending on the species, bamboo shoots (new bamboo culms that come out of the ground) are also harvested for food. They are used in a variety of Asian dishes and broths.

Consider landscaping with bamboo to help protect the planet from deforestation and global warming.
